Extracurricular

Please click on this link to download the most recent version of the school's extra curricular timetable.
Extracurricular life is a very important aspect of life in St. David's Secondary School and we pride ourselves on our extensive list of activities. As you can see in our Activities Timetable for 2019/2020, we have a club or activity to cater for a wide variety of interests and talents. These clubs play a very important role in stress management and improve peer interaction and teacher student relationships. We encourage every student to join at least one of the activities mentioned below.

Applied Maths Club

Picture
Applied maths is, as the name suggests, a maths subject, however the emphasis is on solving physical problems such as how a cannon ball moves, or how two snooker balls collide. It is more physical than maths and more mathematical than physics. It is also very close to the new “Project Maths” style of exam that students will now be sitting in state examinations.

Naturally, a good level of maths is required, but studying applied maths will also strengthen your maths skills. Many students find studying this subject very useful for Leaving Certificate Higher Level Maths. Students studying physics, applied maths and higher level maths will find that there is a lot of common ground between the subjects.
If you are studying maths for Leaving Certificate at an higher level then applied maths is likely to be a good fit for you. As a seventh or eighth subject, it can be dropped if it proves unsuitable, but many students will find it to be one of their favourites.

Only around 1000 students in the country take this exam each year, and very few schools offer it as an option. The opportunity to study this fascinating subject is not open to most students in the country, but it is to students of St. David's Holy Faith Secondary School, Greystones. All students are encouraged to take it.

Applied maths takes place every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday. Please contact Mr. O'Donnachadha or Mr. Davies for further details.

Art Portfolio Prep

Picture
The Art Portfolio Prep takes place in the art room of St. David’s every Thursday after school.

The Portfolio Preparation course also takes place within the Art Club for students wishing to pursue Art at third level.

For more information on both of these courses or to book a place please contact Ms. Sheridan.

Basketball Club - On hold due to Covid - 19

Picture
Basketball is open to both senior and junior, boys and girls. Training takes place out on the outdoor basketball courts on Mondays after school. Team training may occur some Fridays or lunchtimes prior to upcoming matches.

Currently, in the school we have four teams: U-16 Boys’ team, Junior Girls’ team and a Junior Boys’ team. We also have students who love participating on a Tuesday and Friday after school but who don’t play competitively. The U-16 team plays the majority of their games before Christmas, whereas our Junior teams’ seasons won’t commence until after Christmas.

The girls’ teams are registered with a local Wicklow league and compete with local schools such as East Glendalough, Avondale C.C., St. Mary’s Arklow and Gaelcholáiste na Mara. The boys’ teams are registered with the southeastern region of Basketball Ireland and often travel as far as Carlow and Tipperary to compete in games. A basketball table official’s lesson will be organised for interested 3rd, 4th and 5th Year students later this year. A basketball blitz will take place during the summer term and is open for all students who are keen to participate.
Those interested in joining, please contact Ms. Courtney or Ms. Ní Chatháin.

Book Club

Picture
Book Club takes place once a month in the school's library, usually on a Wednesday. It is an opportunity for students and staff to get together, outside of the classroom, and discuss their opinions on books of all kinds.

The choice of books alternates every month, with the students choosing one month and the teachers the next. Discussions on the books usually last for 30 - 45 minutes. Anyone interested in coming along should contact Ms. Sweeney or any English teacher in St. David's.  Looking forward to seeing you there!

Chess Club

Picture
Chess club is now firmly established and much loved in the school. The students meet after school weekly on Thursdays in  room 26 to practise and compete. Mr. Ó Donnachada organises the sessions and the competitions in the school and adds that “the club is a great way for students to develop their logical thinking skills and compete but also to relax and enjoy one another’s company while partaking in an activity that they love”.

Our school chess club aims to cater for all levels of player. Even if you can’t play, you are more than welcome to come along and learn. Throughout the year we hold a First year competition, an ongoing “Ladder” Competition, and a student - teacher competition. We have also had a good record playing against teams from other schools. Chess is a great way to develop logical thinking and make new friends.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Each year the Music Club students perform in a Christmas concert.  The club also provides music for church services throughout the year.

Rugby

Picture

Rugby at St. David’s
St. David’s rugby has a strong history and traditionally run three teams for boys from September to April - First Year’s Team, a Junior Team (for 2nd and 3rd years) and a Senior team (TY, 5th and 6th years).

St. David’s are grateful to Greystones Rugby Club for allowing them the use of their excellent facilities where we train the teams during the weekday evenings and play all our home matches. The teams play a mixture of friendlies and competitive rugby within the Leinster region, usually in the Development Cup.

St. David's also have Junior and Senior girls teams who compete in the Leinster Tier A blitzes.

The coaching staff follows the IRFU recommended training program titled '6 to 6 Nations' (attached) and emphasise the enjoyment of the sport and all the associated ethos of a rugby player.

Sailing

Picture
Transition year students are introduced to sailing at a course run by Greystones Sailing Club in the autumn or spring term.
For those students who hold an ISA level 3 or more and have access to a sailing boat there are opportunities to represent the school in two established regattas. Firstly, the inter-school regatta held in Sutton Dingy Club, which runs every year at the end of September. Or nearer to home, there is a regatta run by St. Gerard’s in May and St. David’s sailing team compete.
Luckily we have had students who are regular racers at Greystones Sailing Club which have represented the school over the years. The liaison teacher to organise event entry is Ms. Cavey.

Soccer - On hold due to Covid - 19

Picture
David's currently runs four boys soccer teams. The teams consist of a first year team, an under-15 team, an under-17 team and a senior team.

All teams play in the Wicklow/Wexford league with the first year team this year also entered into a Leinster competition. Training currently takes place on a Monday after school on the outside courts.

Any player interested in signing up should contact Mr. Boland as soon as possible.

Spikeball - On hold due to Covid - 19

Picture
Spikeball is an adaptation of volleyball.  It is designed to make the game more appealing to students as the emphasis is on more strikes, quick play and rotations, whereby every player goes through all positions and receives equal time on the court.
Spikeball in St. David's takes place on a Thursday after school in the sports hall from 3.30pm - 4.30pm. Last year the number of girls attending was consistently over twenty five, primarily made up of first and second year students.  All junior girls are welcome to attend.

Young Scientist

Picture
This competition offers our students the chance to represent the school at the BT Young Scientist’s exhibition which is held at the R.D.S. every January.
If lucky enough to win, students go on to represent the competition at the European Union contest for young scientists.  There are over 120 prizes to be won in Dublin alone.  It’s a great way to inspire pupils to pursue the vital subjects of science, technology, engineering and maths and a brilliant opportunity to showcase the school’s scientific strengths.
The competition is open to students aged between 12 and 19 years and you can enter your project as an individual or share the work as a group.  To give everybody an equal chance of winning, there are three age groups in which to enter.
