Handpainted baubles idea wins student entrepreneur prize

St Davids School are delighted to announce that Transition Year student Ciara Whooley has won the Senior category in this year’s National Student Enterprise Awards for her handpainted baubles idea. Ciara won the overall top prize as sole trader for her Irish Baubles business. This follows on from her recent success at county level where she won the top award for sole trader. She was one of the students from 11 schools around the county represented at the 2012 final of the Wicklow County Enterprise Board Student Enterprise Awards held on Friday 9th March in Wicklow County Campus, Rathnew. There were 28 entries overall, selling everything from Christmas wreaths to calendars, charm bracelets and wooden spoons. The competing companies were judged on the quality of their business report, a three minute presentation which they made on the day and the quality of their display in the exhibition hall.
While travelling, Ciara had spotted Christmas baubles containing photos of famous cities around the world and came up with the idea for her mini-company – individually presented glass baubles, hand painted with scenes from Greystones.
Her first product was such a success at the Wicklow Gaol Victorian Christmas market that she now has a growing range of glass baubles in development in preparation for the 2012 Christmas markets.
“It is the only hand painted glass bauble containing Irish scenery on the market today,” said Ciara. “I am already developing a series of prototypes for the 2012 Christmas Market. My goal is to have one new bauble for each province and I am also looking into corporate baubles – individually wrapped Christmas baubles, branded with company logos etc for Christmas 2012.”
Ciara has already developed a bauble for Dublin City containing the spire and O’Connell St as part of her new plans.
There is a funny story about her make-or-break moment, she said. “Delivery of my first shipment of 200 baubles of Greystones was delayed and only arrived five days before Christmas. I had a stand at the Wicklow Gaol Victorian Christmas Market and managed to sell all 200 baubles at the market, outselling all of my ‘grown up’ competitors – so from almost disaster to a wonderful success.”

Concern sponsored Schools Debating Competition

St David’s School recently hosted Gael Scoil Na Mara Arklow in the Concern sponsored Schools Debating Competition. The event is taking place over Winter 2011/12. We are delighted to say that St David’s has done very well in the Wicklow League to date. We wish them the very best of luck for further success and are hoping that the team will get through to the knock-out stages in the Spring.

St Davids Annual School Christmas Fair

St Davids Annual School Christmas Fair was held on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of December last and we are delighted to say it was a huge success. Many thanks are due to all who were involved. Trojan work was done by the volunteer parents and students who helped make the school look so festive for the occasion and who worked relentlessly all weekend to ensure the event went swimmingly. Our grateful thanks is also extended in no small part to the many local businesses who supported us and donated such wonderful prizes for our raffle. And of course, thanks too to the stall holders without whom the weekend would not have been possible. This was our biggest and most ambitious Fair to date with over seventy stalls participating. Practically the whole ground floor of the school became one big festive village. Thanks too to Santa who listened patiently to the requests of the many eager young visitors to his grotto! Finally, a big thank-you is gratefully extended to the local community who visited us in their droves and gave us their support. It was a brilliant weekend for all.

Refurbishment of the Art Room

St Davids School are delighted to announce that the long-awaited refurbishment of the Art Room has now been completed. It is looking fantastic and will hopefully instill our students with the inspiration to produce many masterpieces!

Adam Harris is “Young Ambassador of the Year”

St Davids School are delighted to announce the tremendous achievement of pupil Adam Harris in becoming the Bray Lions Club Young Ambassador of the Year.

ADAM HARRIS, a student at St. David’s Holy Faith Secondary School in Greystones, has been chosen as Bray Lions Club ‘ Young Ambassador of the Year’.

Adam will now represent the club at zone and regional stages of the Lions International ‘ Young Ambassador’ programme.

Adam, who is a brother of Fine Gael TD Simon Harris, is a founder member and chairperson of the Greystones branch of Amnesty International. He is also active in Greystones Tidy Towns and the Vincent’s Charity Shop and has worked as a volunteer with Delgany Community Council and Delgany Heritage.

He is currently developing a website to provide information for people touched by Asbergers disease. At the beginning of the current Academic Year Adam was chosen as Prefect of his Class at St. David’s.

His many interests include reading, politics and working in a local cafe.

The club began its search for an ambassador last September and are very pleased with their winner. The Lions European Young Ambassador programme rewards young people who are making a contribution to their local community through voluntary work, sporting activity or good citizenship.

3rd Year trip to Dáil Éireann

Third year students recently paid a visit to Dáil Éireann where they met TD and former St Davids pupil, Mr Simon Harris. The occasion was all part of their project for CSPE. They also met another former pupil of St Davids, Mr John O’Brien who is a Law graduate. Mr O’Brien is currently working with Simon Harris. The students were accompanied by their teacher,Ms. Triona Brosnan.

St Davids Debs Ball 2011

A reception was held at the school on Tuesday evening the 13th of September for all former sixth year students (and their parents) who graduated this summer. The wonderful food was provided by parent Joanna Mulvey. Waiting staff were suitably attired in black for the occasion! Subsequently, the students traveled by bus to attend their Debs Ball at the Grand Hotel, Wicklow. A marvelous evening was had by all.

Volunteer List for 2011 – 2012

Dear Parent, St Davids School would very much appreciate your help over the coming school year with certain activities which are designed to enhance your child’s school experience in St David’s. We need parents to help out with the following list of events and also perhaps to propose any new ideas, events or activities your may see an opportunity for in the school. New ideas are always most welcome, especially in the fundraising area.

Your participation in any of the following is greatly appreciated:

Parent’s Association – 1 meeting per month.

The Christmas Fair which runs over three days in December – Committee helpers are required to plan the event, put up posters and collect some raffle prizes. Help is also needed with set up and decoration on the Friday night and the sale of raffle tickets in advance at Tesco and Supervalu. Help is also needed to sell tickets on the night and with catering on the day. Helpers work for two hour slots.

Car Boot Sale – Runs April to October. Help needed every second Sunday morning. Dads needed for this too please!

6th Year Yearbook – Approx ten hours commitment to help co-ordinate it’s production with the students.

Catering – Occasional 1 -2 hour slots.

Bag Pack at Tescos – Usually over Easter Weekend. Two hour slots.

Debs Ball – Help with organising the event in conjunction with students, plus some supervision on the night.

St Davids School Car Boot Sale

St. David’s Car Boot Sale is held every second Sunday from early March to the end of September every year and to date, we are pleased to say is running very successfully. There are a huge variety of items on sale including clothes, books, antiques, furniture, bric-a-brac, plants, home-baked goods and bargains galore!

Venue: St Davids Sea Front Car Park (NB:One way street)

Open to the public from 9am to 3pm. Gates open to sellers from 7.30am. (Gates are locked at 3.30pm)

Admission: Cars: €13 Vans/Cars with Trailers: €25 Payable at gate on entry (Gates open at 7.30am for sellers)

Rules

First 90 cars only can be accomodated. Gates will be closed when full.

All cars to park with boot facing out, or as directed by those in charge.

Cars parking sideways or taking up more than one space will be charged €25.

Strictly no parking on school grounds except for sellers. Buyers must park on sea road, and will be charged €15 if found parking on school grounds.

For safety: No parking in front of gates. Keep both gates clear at all times.

Enter through IN gate and exit through OUT gate. Sea Road is ONE WAY.

All sellers are asked to bring home their rubbish and to respect school property.

Those littering will be asked to leave and will not be admitted to future sales.

No refunds under any circumstances eg: bad weather, no buyers etc.

Proceeds from space rental go to St. David’s School. Your support is greatly appreciated.
