In October the First Years had a visit from a cyber detective who spoke with them about internet safety and how to behave online.
The talk started with a quiz asking first year students had to answer questions about internet safety. The questions quizzed the students on a variety of online information from details about different social apps, such as Facebook, to video platforms, such as Youtube. The first years performed really well and were even praised by the guest speaker.
Next, the detective talked about seeing unusual content online and what to do when a thing like that is seen. Her main advice was to talk to a adult and discuss it. Next they talked about password security and what passwords to use. She advised them not to relate their password to any personal details. The First Years learned that including a lot of numbers and different signs in a password makes it harder to crack. Another good idea is to auto-generate passwords in an app.
Finally the detective discussed safety in apps such as Snapchat and Youtube. She acknowledge the importance of privacy especially when using Snapchat and to be careful when browsing through Youtube.
