1st Year Girls Soccer vs Scoil Críost Rí Portlaoise

On Monday the 20th of April the first year girls' soccer team, led by Mr. O’Donnchadha, made their way down to Greystones United to play a much anticipated match vs Scoil Críost Rí Portlaoise.

The match kicked off at 12 sharp. The girls started strong and looked like the more dominant team. In the first 5 minutes the team were awarded a corner which was almost put away. The play was back and forth between the two teams but Lucia Brock had some mentionable skillful dribbles passing many players, running down the line and resulting in many chances, but also getting back and helping in defense when needed. The chances became worth it when Katie Ward slotted the ball into the top left corner putting the girls in the lead. The opposition fought back strongly but with the defense being excellent the first half ended 1-0, reflecting the fantastic performance from the entire team.

After an inspirational talk from coach Mr. O’Donnchadha, the girls entered the second half ready to go. Goalkeeper Elliana Stokes was forced to make some outstanding saves but unfortunately the girls conceded at the beginning of the second half, levelling the match. The team fought back hard but they failed to keep the strong opposition out and conceded another goal. The score was now 2-1, but St. David's refused to back down and was awarded a well deserved penalty late into the second half.  The penalty taker was captain Lucia Brock. The stakes were high but she calmly put the penalty out of reach from the opposition’s keeper after a rebounded shot. The girls agonisingly conceded 2 minutes before the final whistle, leaving the score as a 3-2 loss. 

The girls showed great determination throughout the match and left everything on the pitch, especially in the last few minutes of the match. A huge thank you to Mr. O’Donnchadha, Greystones United and all involved for helping this first year team come as far as they have this year.
