6th Year Dietician and Healthy Eating Workshop

During period 2 on the 13th of September, the sixth years took part in a dietician and healthy eating workshop. The workshop was run by registered dietician Gillian McConnell. She specialises in sports nutrition but also has great experience in nutrition in nursing homes and in corporate companies such as Dell and Google. She spoke to the 6th years about the importance of eating healthily especially in your teenage years when your body is undergoing changes.

Gillian McConnell highlighted the importance of all the key different minerals and vitamins that your body needs in order to function to its full potential. She highlighted the importance of iron, calcium, Vitamin D, fibre, carbohydrates and protein in your diet. Ms McConnell then moved on to saying that it is essential for teenagers between the ages of 16 to 18 to eat as natural of a diet as possible and not introduce the likes of supplements like Creatine Monohydrate as it is not natural and can be cross contaminated with steroids. She couldn’t stress enough how important it is to drink enough water and have enough sleep as it not only affects your diet but also your mental and physical health.

Lets hope our 6th years took some valuable information from a very interesting workshop that will benefit them for years to come!
