On the 6th of March, Mr. Geoghegan’s junior girls soccer team once again made history, by not only being the first St. David’s girls team to reach a final but also the first girls team to win the competition!
After a quick team talk from captain Grace O’Neill, the girls were ready and determined to give the match their best shot. Loreto Bray immediately showed the girls that it would not be an easy match to win and that they were going to put up a fight. Throughout the first half there was very equal play and opportunities for both sides with stand out performances from Alanna Synnott and Chloe Byrne in defence for St. David’s. There were a few shots from each team during the first half which certainly kept everyone on the edge of their seats! Despite the effort from both teams the first half ended 0-0.
An encouraging half time talk from Mr. Geoghegan and Grace reminded the girls that this would not be an easy win and team work would be vital, the girls went back onto the pitch with high hopes and ready to battle.
The half started with St. David’s kicking off with a quick press by Loreto once again reminding the girls they could not take it easy. The match remained even until Emily O’Driscoll took the pitch by storm and scored an excellent goal. The crowd was ecstatic, however, the match quickly started back and concentration was needed. St. David’s were energised and momentum was high but with half an hour still left in the match they had not won yet. Both teams continued to take shots although neither were successful in scoring due to some excellent talent displayed in goals both from St. David’s goalkeeper Hazel Prendergast and Loreto Bray's goalkeeper.
The match came to a close after an amazing amount of talent was displayed by both teams. Each and every girl on the pitch played tremendously and should be very proud of themselves! It is important to also show appreciation for Mr. Geoghegan and the incredible work he puts into training the girls every week. A huge thank you also to Loreto Bray for an amazing match!
