Sports Day 2025

On Friday 9th of May, we staged one of the most anticipated events in our annual school calendar: Sports Day. Students were primed for competition after receiving a rousing pep talk from their tutors, with the promise of sporting immortality awaiting the overall winners (and sporting ignominy facing the class awarded the wooden spoon).

The weather couldn’t have been better as staff and students made the short walk down to Eire Og, who kindly facilitate us each year at the grounds. Throughout the morning, students took part in a wide array of events, from javelin, to relays, to the wellie throw. Soon enough, the medals were flowing as the multitude of sporting talents took centre stage.

After several hours of jam-packed action, the students gathered round the centre of the pitch for one of the highlights of the day: the female teachers taking on the 6th Year girls in a tug of war bout. Despite incredible support from a fervent set of 6th Year cheerleaders, the students ultimately fell just short of victory, allowing the teachers to claim the win this year.

In the afternoon, the 6th Year boys were looking for revenge for their classmates, taking on the male teachers in a football match. The game was surprisingly even given the age difference and mobility of both sides but the scoreline was level at 1-1 heading into the half-time break; a Max Synott strike had been cancelled out thanks to a free-kick from Mr. Dunne.

Both teams had goals ruled out soon after the break before the students broke the deadlock. Mr. Brady then scored a not-all-dubious penalty afterwards to restore parity but this was to be the end of the teachers’ good form. An unfortunate own goal from an unnamed Geography, Business and Religion teacher allowed the students to take an unexpected lead before Marley Gunn closed out the scoring, leading to a final score of 4-2 to the students.

Thank you to all students who take part in every part of the day and to the teachers who facilitated!
