St. David’s vs. Woodbrook College U16’s Girls’ Basketball

On Wednesday the 24th of September, our U16 girl’s basketball team, coached by Ms. Dempsey, faced off against Woodbrook College in our own sports arena in an unforgettable show of talent and determination.

Both teams went into the first quarter feeling strong but it was clear that St. David’s had the upper hand from the get-go, quickly taking possession. We saw great plays by Sinéad Seifried and 2 quick baskets scored by Gillian Delos Reyes to bring David’s to a 4-0 lead. With the support from our U19’s girls’ basketball team from the sidelines, we collected 18 points to nil in the 1st quarter!

For the second quarter we once again saw great teamwork from the jump with Moya Marrinan being the star of the show, making very impressive passes and layups. Woodbrook made a clean layup scoring 1. Laila Mellet and Niamh Hoolahan played exceptionally and by the end of the 2nd quarter, the scoreline was 26-2 to St. David’s.

After swapping sides and listening to Ms. Dempsey’s inspirational talk, the St. David’s girls were in good form going into the 3rd quarter, and it showed. The highlight of this half was definitely Aoibh’s incredible interception which followed with a world class jump shot by Moya Marinan. Well done to Lily Courtney and Ella Cheetan also for continued attack and defense which paid off extremely well for us. The score by the end of the 3rd quarter was 36-2.

The girls clearly thought their lead wasn’t enough for them and with Niamh Hoolahan playing incredible defense, there was no chance to stop David’s from scoring an extra 6 points, bringing the score to 42-2.

Woodbrook again made a good play which had them gain 2 points from a jump shot, however the girls could not be beaten and the full time score was 42-4 to St. David’s.

A big well done to the St. David’s U16 girl’s basketball team for their great performance. Thank you to Woodbrook College for coming out here and as always, thank you to coach Ms. Dempsey. Well done girls!
