STEM Week March 2026

This week, the 23rd to the 27th of March, marked the celebration of STEM week in St. David’s. Each and every student had the chance to get involved in interesting activities and bond as a year group through STEM.

Our 6th years were exceptionally busy this week, with speakers coming in to give some fantastic talks. On Monday Professor Aisling Ní Annaidh from UCD kindly gave a talk on mechanical engineering and on Friday they also received a talk on mechanical engineering. Both talks were extremely informative, a huge thank you to both speakers.

At lunchtime on Tuesday, we saw a Coding Club Arcade Game Competition. This was a competitive event and invited a huge amount of involvement from the student body. The students have been designing, coding and testing their own arcade games on Wednesdays after school since after the Christmas break. The competition took place and everyone was invited to come down and vote for their favourite game - well done to Con Dillon who won the top prize!

Our third year students were also feeling the pressure, competing in the annual Pi quiz at home in our own dining area. It was a tense showdown between many different schools who travelled down to attempt to take the victory. Our students put in their very best effort and did extremely well, however they were unlucky and came up just short of the win, with one of our teams finishing an agonisingly close 4th place.

Our 5th year students had an interesting NCI talk on Tuesday, and were also given a full Mr. Math Weeny Workshop on Thursday.  In the school library on Wednesday, the Lego club had a Lego Stop motion Workshop. It was a great workshop and saw an immense amount of creativity from every student involved. Lastly, our first years took on some complex projects this week and designed functioning parachutes that they tested from the third floor.

This week was a huge success, fully allowing students to immerse themselves in the world of STEM. A massive thank you once again to the speakers who took the time to come in and give some spectacular talks and to all the teachers who were involved with organising events. Well done everyone!
