The International Tour is most definitely one of the highlights of Transition Year. This year, 120 students and 12 teachers headed off to beautiful Italy for four action packed days exploring the breathtaking region of Northern Italy. Some of the activities planned included a boat trip across Lake Garda, a full day in the Gardaland Theme Park and a guided tour around the historical city of Venice.
Day 1:
The students had a very early start this day, having to meet in the dining hall at 2:30 am! It was abundantly clear that everyone was exhausted, however, the excitement was palpable. Everyone boarded the bus and after a short journey they arrived at Dublin Airport. They checked in their bags and went through security and then had some time to get breakfast before heading to the gate and boarding the flight. After a seamless two and a half hour flight everyone landed in Milan Airport. Then, they boarded the bus and headed towards the quaint town of Sirmione, where the accommodation was located. When the TY’s arrived they had some free time to grab a bite of lunch and explore the town before heading down to the port where they embarked on a cruise across Lake Garda. The views were absolutely stunning and the sun was splitting the stones. After disembarking the boat they explored Garda Town, then headed back to their accommodation. After a delicious dinner, everyone went back to their bungalow for some much needed sleep!
Day 2:
The day started bright and early with a continental breakfast before making the two and half hour trip by bus and boat to Venice. Venice is built on over 100 islands connected by canals and bridges and is known for its gorgeous historical architecture. Venice is familiar to most TY students, as last year they studied the ‘Merchant of Venice’ by Shakespeare in English. Upon arrival they were treated to authentic Italian gelato which was to die for! Then they had a quick guided tour where they walked around the major sights of the city. They saw the gondolas and the famous Rialto Bridge. Afterwards, the students had free time to explore the city and get a bite to eat! Later, they headed back to the accommodation where they had their dinner and headed to bed.
Day 3:
Day 3 was the most anticipated day of the whole trip because students had the full day in the Gardaland Theme Park. This theme park was absolutely massive and had so many fun roller coasters. Unfortunately, the weather had taken a turn for the worst, however, that did not stop them from having a blast! The fan-favourite rides were the ‘Oblivian’ and the ‘Blue Tornado’. After eight thrilling hours, the TYs ended the day with dinner and games in the accommodation.
Day 4:
This was the final day of the trip but it was still full of fun! After packing and saying goodbye to where they were staying, the TYs headed to the gorgeous city of Verona- the fabled birthplace of Romeo and Juliet! Here, they were given a guided tour where they saw the ‘Arena di Verona’ and Juliet’s Balcony. The students had some leisure time to shop around Verona before boarding the bus and heading to Milan Airport. After a long day, everyone arrived home safely in Dublin Airport and then went back to school where they were collected.
I think it is safe to say that it was an amazing trip that was thoroughly enjoyed by all! We would like to say a massive thank you to all the teachers who accompanied us, and of course, a huge thanks to Ms Murphy and Mr Hallissey who organised this amazing trip!!!
