On Tuesday the 25th of March 2025, our Young Social Innovators teams competed in the annual Speak Out Tour.
After making the journey to Kilkenny, the teams waited nervously for their time on stage. Each group had to make a quick 2 minute presentation on their chosen issue they decided to solve. St David's entered 3 groups this year.
The Get Voting Team consisted of Anna O’Driscoll, Erin Gonzalez, Rachel John, Conan Byrne, Sarah McCloskey, Holly Goodwin, Lily Thomas, Jonah Patterson, Chloe Brady, Zoe Cartmell and Emily Walsh Randall. Their group tackled the problems around young people voting. Prior to the 2024 General election, the team educated 6th Year students about voting and the local representatives that were in the running. They then invited all local representatives to come into the school for a debate. They also held a mock election for the whole school.
The Access Greystones team consisted of Sarah McIlroy, Hannah Breen, Hannah O’Carroll, Eabha Hickey, Ruby Held, Barry McGrath, Ewan MacAdam, Saoirse Crean and Leah Clancy. Their group spread awareness about accessing Greystones for people who need it. They went around Greystones checking various paths and parking spaces, while also checking if the bathrooms within shops/cafes were accessible. Once they gathered all their information they made a booklet to spread more awareness about the topic.
The Sports for All team consisted of Max Waddington, Ben McLaren, Daniel Ceano, Jorge Duch, Conor O’Sullivan, Joe Kavanagh, Kraig Neiland, Elijah Pegman and Noah Morgan. Their group tackled the issues surrounding disabilities in sports. They partnered up with St Catherine's school which is a local school that caters for disabled children. The group planned a day for the children to have fun and learn new skills in a tag rugby tournament. They also made 50 cupcakes and had drinks afterwards to finish off an already spectacular day.
Well done to all the YSI teams and a big thank you to their YSI guide, Ms. Foynes.
