On the 15th of January, our 1st and 2nd year girls took to the court for their first game of the season. The girls' hopes and spirits were high as they warmed up, looking forward to their game. The girls were given some inspiration from their coaches Ms. Matthews and Ms. Flynn, allowing them to enter the match with confidence.
From the very beginning, we saw brilliant teamwork and communication from the starting 5 on the court. Exceptional tackles were made and each girl displayed all their skills they have learnt in training since the start of September. St. David’s were met with a strong defense but managed to put their name on the board from our number 22, Isabel Burn.
Starting off the second quarter the 1st years held a strong offense and showed off their shooting skills to the opponents. Excellent displays of talent from Elsie Fioraso and Elena Caffrey were seen throughout this quarter. To close the second quarter a basket was awarded by Nancy. The half time whistle blew with a score of 16-5 to GCC.
As the second half started the girls put their game faces on and were determined to get some more baskets. Ruth Howard started with a bang using her skills to score a brilliant basket from a foul. Great teamwork and friendship was to be noted also. Through the third quarter we saw some strong performances from Nina Clerkin who pushed the girls through to the final quarter.
As the final quarter progressed we once again saw amazing dribbling, shooting and passing from all team members on the court. Excellent performances came from Ruth and Hannah which should also be recognised. The final whistle blew, and unfortunately the girls fell just short of the win. They were met with a stronger team than they would have liked but the score or the match is not a reflection on the girls' abilities and performances.
Keep up the good work girls!
We would also like to take the opportunity to thank Ms. Matthews and Ms. Flynn for training the girls every Thursday in our sports arena!
