On Thursday the 27th of November, our 1st Year GAA team went up against our Greystones rivals, Greystones Community College. It was a hard fought match and both teams played exceptionally well.
GCC began the game with the ball, putting on high pressure and nearly scoring a point, but David’s displayed their immaculate defense and didn’t give GCC a chance to get an easy point. Our 1st Years got the ball off GCC and Ethan McCann scored the first point of the match, just a couple minutes in. St David’s kept up the energy and got two more points, scored by Paddy Johnston and Alfie Monaghan. With another point and an excellent goal, the scoreboard was 1-4 0-0 to St David’s at the start of the first half.
GCC was now under huge pressure to catch up to David’s and narrowly missed a goal, thanks to superb defense off the line by David’s. Our 1st years scored another point, just before GCC scores a penalty goal. This raises the spirits in GCC and they scored 3 more points, but David’s remained in the lead by the end of the first half, with a score of 1-6 1-5.
After a team talk by coach Mr. Lawless, the lads were back on the pitch for the second half, just as the rain started. David’s put the foot on the gas and scored 2 further points and a goal from Aiden McGarr, making the score 2-8 1-5 to David’s. GCC didn’t make it easy for David’s as they tried to catch up by scoring a point and a goal, making it a tight match. David Brennan scored a point before GCC scored another goal, making the score an even 2-9 3-6.
The 1st year lads felt the pressure put on by GCC and kept the heads and energy high. After a goal from Finn Gilmore, David’s were put back in the lead. This inspired the lads to keep fighting and another point was scored by Paddy Johnston. After another goal and 6 more points, David’s enjoyed a strong spell of attacking place. After an incredible goal by Ethan McCann, the match finished with a final score of 5-16 3-6 to St David’s. Very well done to our 1st year lads and their coach Mr. Lawless. Keep it up!
