Over the Easter holidays, 78 of our wonderful Year students swapped chocolate eggs for puffy coats and embarked on the adventure of a lifetime to the land of fire and ice – Iceland!
From the moment we landed in Reykjavik, it was non-stop excitement. We started off at flyover Iceland where students and teachers alike were strapped in to experience an immersive ride that gave us a bird’s-eye view of Iceland’s dramatic landscapes - soaring over glaciers, volcanoes, fjords and waterfalls.
Our days were filled with jaw-dropping natural wonders, dramatic landscapes, and enough photo opportunities to keep Instagram busy for weeks! We explored thundering waterfalls, stood in awe on the black sand beach of Reynisfjara in Vik - voted the most beautiful black sand beach in the world and even walked between two tectonic plates at Þingvellir National Park. No big deal… just straddling two continents! We’ve never seen Mr. Carey so excited!
Dinner time was its own kind of magic – each night the waiters dressed in traditional viking clothing and on night one even surprised us with traditional Icelandic folk songs and music, filling the room with culture, warmth, and more than a few smiles.
A highlight for many was the Golden Circle tour, where we got up close and personal with the famous Strokkur geyser and thanks to our wonderful tour guides Neil and Arman, we even got to go see the Sólheimajökull glacier and to see the infamous Eyjafjallajökull volcano which brought aviation in europe to a standstill in 2010 When it erupted.
The Blue Lagoon provided a blissful break from all the adventuring – nothing like a warm silica soak while surrounded by snow-capped lava fields to make you feel like you’re in a spa commercial. And yes, the sulphur-smelling showers may have caught us off guard at first, but by the end of the trip our skin had never felt better. Worth every whiff!
Of course, it wasn’t all about the sights – the trip was packed with laughter, friendship, and unforgettable memories. The students were a credit to the school throughout, showing great curiosity, enthusiasm and resilience (especially during the early morning starts!). A huge thank you to the teachers who organised and accompanied the trip – and to everyone at home who supported us along the way. Iceland, you were cool in every sense of the word!
