From 13-17 October, our school took part in Maths week, a highly anticipated week of events that involved all of the school community.
Every morning during announcements different riddles were broadcast, giving students and teachers a chance to challenge themselves and their problem solving skills. Some examples of such riddles are, ‘If John is 10 and his dad is 30 how many years until John's dad would be double his age?’. As well as ‘If it takes 3 cats 3 minutes to catch 3 mice, how long will it take 100 cats to catch 100 mice?’ These riddles were effective in thoroughly puzzling our school community, however, some were successful in cracking the code.
On Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th, first years took part in maths escape rooms that were created by TY students. These escape rooms involved maths sums that, if solved, unlocked the box that allowed students to access the key to the door. The first years were split into groups of 4-5 and the groups that escaped the quickest won prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place!
On Wednesday the 15th second years, hosted by TYs, had a paper airplane competition. They were able to try different methods to see which would go the farthest and improve upon their original designs. This helped them develop their perseverance and ability to decipher problems. On Friday the 17th they also participated in a table quiz.
On Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th, fifth years took part in Maggie Gough Maths Competition. On Friday, the TYs were also given the opportunity to compete. This is a national quiz run throughout the country.
Overall Maths week was a huge success. Thank you to every student and teacher who got involved and in particular, thank you to the TYs who helped organise the multitude of events that took place all over the school. Well done everyone!
